Principal's Corner: Peabody Students Continue to Improve Academically

Posted Date: 10/14/24 (3:10 PM)

There are many ways to look at school achievement. Indeed, the fun at last Friday’s fantastic Harvest Carnival is one way.  It was great to see so many people attending, connecting with others, and having fun playing games, chasing bubbles, or trying to win a cake in the cake-walk.

Another way to measure success might be the amazing support shown by Peabody families during the school’s annual Peabody Proud Campaign (PPC), which has raised over $160K so far. We hope that even more families will join those who have already given to help us reach our goal of $200K. Thank you to all who have given so far!

Another tangible and public way Peabody receives feedback is through the results of the state-wide math and language arts assessment given to every third through sixth-grade student each spring. The results of this assessment provide feedback on our daily work and provide data that allows Peabody to orient itself among other schools in our local community and state as a whole.

I am pleased to announce that Peabody students have continued to show academic growth in mathematics and language arts. Peabody improved over last year’s results, with over 70% of students showing proficiency (or better) in language arts and over 62% showing proficiency (or better) in mathematics.

This achievement places Peabody as a locally top-performing school and speaks to many levels of school strength.  It speaks to the strength of our students as they continue to engage in their studies.  It speaks to the strength of our families who support their children and the school in many ways.  It speaks to the professionalism and commitment of our staff and teachers who dedicate themselves each and every day to the success of their students, not only academically but socially and emotionally as well.  By working together as a community, we see that more and more of our students can reach their potential.  I want to take a moment to thank the school staff, the students, and all of you, the parents, for the hard work and engagement required to keep moving forward and realizing higher levels of achievement.

To put this achievement into perspective, here are statewide achievement levels:

It is important to remember that assessment results are just one of many ways to evaluate student experience. These scores, to us, represent so much more than a number.  They represent more students developing the skills they need to live happy lives.  They represent greater joy (and sometimes relief) for families as they see their children successful in their studies.  They represent a confident step away from the historical predictability of student performance based on specific demographic factors like household income or primary language and toward a system within which more students are being met where they are and then supported as they attain stronger skills.  Peabody is committed to taking many more steps in this direction.

While we will continue to improve even further, we are proud of our work that allows students to achieve academically. We also value the social-emotional work embedded in the learner profile, the exposure to the arts, the development of physical health, the fostering of a love of laughter through the weekly sharing of student jokes, the nurturing of school-home community, our commitment to equity, and so much more.  Peabody has always believed in taking a whole-child approach, and I am proud to say that that approach continues to provide opportunities for your children to thrive.
